A Charming New Adaptation of the Classic Fairy-Tale!
Tour 2015/16

Fresh out of the oven and hot from sucessful sell-out shows in Brighton 2013, Lantern Light are back and on the sugary road with their charming adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy-tale!

Cooking up all the magic of the original story, but with a refreshing new sensibility, Hansel and Gretel will make a host of new friends with their treacly tale. Songs, dancing, magic and pebble-hunting, baked together and dusted with fresh new characters, a witty script and plenty of imagination, bring enchantment and delight to children and adults alike.

The story starts in a small village, deep in the heart of the Black Forest, when a handsome young woodcutter marries a temptingly mysterious woman. His children don’t like her, but they also don’t like doing their chores or village life! Bread-hating, cake-loving, tomboyish Gretel wants to leave the boring old forest for the excitement of the city and shy, sensitive Hansel – he doesn’t want to cut down trees, he wants to paint them!

Join Lantern Light this Christmas for a tasty treat and find out how the story ends – what kind of a spell has their new stepmother put on Hansel and Gretel’s father?... Can the bird outside the cottage really talk?... And why is there the scent of gingerbread wafting through the trees?...

A show with a heart, about growing up, learning to love your family and not always getting what you want!

Songs, dancing, games for children of all ages (!) to get involved with and sweet giveaways – come down and join us for a tasty treat!

Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite fairy-tale characters!

Age Recommendation: 5+ (though happy to welcome younger members of the family at parents' discretion)
Running Time: 80 minutes (plus a 20 minute interval)

CAST & CREATIVES
2015 Tour

Written & Directed by Sophie Flack
Make-Up by Jeanette Gregory

Gretel - Kim Yates

Picture
Kim trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and since finishing has performed numerous theatre roles including: 'Macbeth' with RIFT Theatre Company; Alice in 'Alice Through The Looking Glass' ; Percival in 'Lord of the Flies' at the Gateway Theatre and 'The Chalk Garden' and 'Kindertransport' with Chester Little Theatre. She has also worked on a series of short films. Kim is a keen singer and plays the violin. She is excited to be touring with Lantern Light  and exploring all the sides of Gretel's naughtiness!

Stepmother/The Witch - Kerren Garner

Picture
Kerren trained at London Repertory Company Academy and since graduating has worked on a range of shows from comedy sketches on stage and television to a verbatim play about Brighton’s Homeless. In addition to acting she also does voice over work and has voiced radio plays and children’s stories. Kerren appeared as Mistress Page this summer in The Brighton Open Air Theatre’s production of ‘Merry Wives of Windsor’ as well as being the assistant director. She is currently working as an actor in ‘Bard of Hope and Glory’, playing some of her favourite characters from across Shakespeare’s works. Kerren has been involved with Lantern Light theatre since the first productions of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ where she co-directed the piece as well as appearing as Stepmother/Witch. She is very excited to be involved in touring the show and bringing it to a new audience alongside working with a great new cast.

Hansel - Gus Kennedy Jacob

Picture
Gus is a London based actor, writer and musician. Growing up in a family of performers, Gus became fascinated with acting at an early age. After receiving a degree in Italian and European Politics from the University of Leeds, he recently graduated from the MA course at East 15 Acting School, where he played roles such as Laertes in 'Hamlet'; Trofimov in 'The Cherry Orchard'; Slim in 'Cowboy Mouth' and Alex in 'The Other Place'. He also sings and writes music in folk band The Woodsmen. Gus is overjoyed to be telling stories that reside in fairytales and fantasy, a place where he has spent much of his life daydreaming, letting his imagination run wild.

Woodcutter/The Bird - Andy Wilson

Picture
Andy completed a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts at St Mary's University College. Since then he has toured with numerous theatre companies, performing at venues such as The Rose Kingston, BAC, The Rag Factory and Twickenham Stadium. He has worked in film and radio and for Nickelodeon. Andy is an actor musician, often called upon to utilize his expansive collection of instruments, which ranges from slide whistles to saxophones, in his work. He has been working almost exclusively in immersive theatre for the past year, turning folk tales from around the world into interactive pieces. He is excited to show a well-known folk tale, but with a modern exploration of gender roles and values. It's important to show that girls can be boisterous, boys can be can be gentle, and everyone has something to wonderful to offer, all whilst having loads of fun.

"A great afternoon's entertainment! I came with my grandson and he loved being near the action and enjoyed interacting with the cast. I liked the psychological twist on the evil stepmother 's character - a new take on the story."
Sue Dumps, Brighton

"A wonderfully quirky production - well acted, great script, innovative props and beautiful staging. Highly recommended to everyone - you'll be entranced!"

Matthew Baker, Lewes
